By lunch, their phone will have forty messages that say "HBD" and nothing else. A few will be cake stickers from people who couldn't think of anything.
These happy birthday wishes for WhatsApp are sorted by where they'll land, because a line that's sweet in a private chat can look strange on your status. Most lines have one small, specific thing in them. Swap it for your own (their dog's name, the 200 rupees they still owe you for popcorn) and nobody will guess where it came from.
Happy birthday wishes for WhatsApp to wake up to
You know they'll check their phone before they've properly sat up. The first message gets read slowly, half asleep, and everything after it gets skimmed. Skip the long poem here. Two warm lines will do at 6 am.
- Happy birthday. I wanted to be the first thing you read, so I typed this last night and waited.
- Your last seen says 4:12 am, so read this whenever you surface. Happy birthday, owl.
- Good morning to the only birthday I never need a reminder for.
- Saw the new DP. Happy birthday, and yes, it's your best photo this year.
- Morning, old man.
- It's your birthday, so wear the nice shirt today. The one you save for weddings.
- First text of your new year. Drink some water before you open the other forty.
- Up already? Happy birthday. Call me once the relatives are done with you, I'll be the calm one.
- Wake up slowly today. Nothing's urgent, and the cake can wait till evening.
- Happy birthday to you and whoever made your breakfast. I hope it had the good butter.
Or make the first message a birthday card that opens on their phone, where they pop balloons and cut the cake before your letter shows up.
Heart touching wishes for people you love but rarely tell
This one's harder.
Some people you love have heard it from you maybe twice, both times at a wedding. A birthday's a decent excuse to say it in daylight. Send one of these and don't chase it with a joke straight away (you'll want to).
- Happy birthday. You've been my pinned chat since 2021 and I never said why. You're who I tell things to first.
- Papa, you'll read this twice and reply with a thumbs up. That's fine, I know what your thumbs up means.
- You picked me up from the station at 2 am and asked nothing. I think about that more than you'd guess.
- Love you, idiot. Happy birthday.
- Didi, every good decision I made this year went past you first. The bad ones I hid.
- Nani, yours are the only voice notes I never speed up.
- I'm bad at saying this out loud, so I'm typing it where I can't see your face. I love you. That's it, that's the message.
- Maa, your handwriting's taped inside my kitchen cupboard, on the dal recipe. I read it more than I cook it.
- That soaked photo of us on Marine Drive has been my lock screen since 2016.
- Bhaiya, you taught me to bowl and to lie to mummy about the broken window. I'm grateful for exactly one of those.
- First call with good news, only call with bad. Happy birthday, and thanks for always picking up.
Funny ones for the chat
Save these for friends who'll send something worse back. The jokes lean on WhatsApp itself (blue ticks, the "typing..." that never ends), so they work best in a chat that's years old.
Before you hit send, check whose chat you're in, because the worst-photo sticker reads very differently in your manager's.
- I made a sticker out of your worst photo, and today it goes to every group I'm in.
- Happy birthday! I'd send a voice note, but you'd play it at 2x and I'd sound like a chipmunk.
- Look at the top of this message. No "Forwarded" label. I typed it myself, with both thumbs.
- Another year of you replying "haha" to everything. Happy birthday, and yes, "haha" is an acceptable reply.
- The video call that froze on your double chin is still my favourite screenshot.
- Pinned you for the day. Don't get used to it.
- Happy birthday to the only person who leaves me on blue ticks for three days, then sends a meme like nothing happened.
- Reply with more than a sticker or I tell everyone your real age.
- One year closer to forwarding good-morning flowers to everyone you know.
- You watched me "typing..." for ten minutes. I wrote a whole paragraph and then panicked. Happy birthday.
- Please don't reply "thanks." with a full stop. It scares me.
- Happy birthday. When's the treat? Answer before your phone conveniently dies.
- Your new DP has a filter on it and I'm saying nothing. Happy birthday, gorgeous.
- Another year, still replying "k". Happy birthday, k?
- May every voice note you get today be under a minute.
Birthday status wishes, with space for an emoji
Your status gets watched between a friend's lunch photo and a cousin's gym selfie. So these happy birthday wishes for WhatsApp status are short (all under nine words), and the space at the end is for your emoji.
Everyone uses the cake and the balloon. That's fine, though their favourite food or one red heart looks like you chose it on purpose.
- Happy birthday, my favourite notification.
- Same chat since 2014. Happy birthday, you.
- Born today, still late for everything.
- Happy birthday to my emergency contact.
- My brother and my ATM. Happy birthday, bhai.
- Worst photo, best person. Happy birthday.
- Turning 21, acting 12.
- My whistling teacher turns 30 today.
- Birthday girl, please answer your phone.
- Happy birthday, Papa. Taller than all of us.
- Nice to you for 24 hours. Starting now.
- May the cake be chocolate.
- The loudest laugh in every room turns 25.
- Best person to sit in silence with.
- Ten years of voice notes. Happy birthday, bestie.
- Pinned for life. Happy birthday, yaar.
For the group that only wakes up for birthdays
Chaos, every time.
Someone posts a cake sticker at midnight, and by morning sixty messages all say "HBD" with slightly different punctuation. In the family group it's worse, because mausi knows exactly who hasn't wished by ten (she keeps a list in her head, and she shares it). Keep yours short and a little different. The long stuff belongs in their private chat.
- Adding mine to the pile. Happy birthday, and please don't thank each of us one by one.
- Happy birthday from the quiet corner of this group. I read everything, I just never type.
- Getting in before chacha posts the "many many happy returns" roses.
- Already wished you privately, for the record. This is the public copy.
- This group's been silent since Holi. Thanks for giving us a reason.
- Respect to whoever dug out the baby photo in the bucket. Happy birthday, bucket baby.
- Happy birthday! Who's bringing the cake on Sunday? Last year it was me, and nobody paid me back.
- Seventy messages in, so I'll be quick. Happy birthday, and you can mute us for 8 hours now.
Wishes for someone you haven't texted in years
Don't pretend you're still close. They'll know. Mention one real thing you remember, like the bench outside the chemistry lab or the desk by the window, and leave the door open without pushing.
A "we should meet up" is fine once. Twice, and they'll think you're selling insurance.
- Happy birthday from your old bench partner. I still can't do long division without hearing you sigh.
- Your name came up in my contacts as "Neha Accounts" and I smiled. Happy birthday from the old third floor.
- Toronto's asleep, I know. By the time you're up, we'll have eaten your cake for you. Happy birthday.
- I know we mostly just watch each other's status now. Still, happy birthday, and I mean it.
- I've got your 12th physics notes somewhere. Never gave them back, never will.
- Don't feel you have to reply with a whole catch-up. I wanted to say it before the day ran out.
- The office printer jams every Monday, and nobody fixes it the way you did.
- Saw your status from the hills and thought, good, you're doing alright. Happy birthday.
- It's been years, so I'll keep this short. Happy birthday, and I hope Bengaluru's dosas beat our canteen's.
Late wishes, for when you forgot
Yesterday was their birthday, and you've just seen the cake on someone else's status. Fine. Say sorry once, in the first line, and get to the wish.
Long apologies make it about you. And then they have to type "it's totally fine" when they're a bit annoyed.
- Happy birthday, about 26 hours late. In my defence, I have none.
- My phone reminded me. I ignored my phone. Happy belated birthday, and I owe you a samosa.
- Yes, it was yesterday. Yes, I know. Happy birthday, and the treat's on me this time.
- Two days late, which for us is basically on time.
- This is late, so leave it on blue ticks for a day. Then we're even.
- I missed it and I've got no excuse worth typing. Happy birthday. Please still invite me next year.
- Late, but the leftover cake isn't finished yet, so it counts.
- Saw everyone's status this morning and wanted to disappear. Very sorry, and very happy birthday.
- Missed it by a day, and I'll hear about it till your next birthday. Fair.
- Late, like your replies. Happy birthday.
Voice note scripts to record in one go
Read the script out loud once, then record it with your eyes off the screen (reading sounds like reading). Keep it under 30 seconds, or it gets played at 2x.
Stumbles are fine. Leave them in, because the ninth take always comes out like the evening news on Doordarshan.
For mummy
Hi mummy, okay, happy birthday. I'll call tonight, but this one you can play again. Listen, the box of laddoos you packed for me is down to two, and I'm eating half a laddoo a day, like medicine. So, send more. Wait, I'm meant to be saying nice things. I love you. Happy birthday, okay, bye bye.
For your best friend
Listen, I know you'll play this at 2x, so I'm talking slowly just to annoy you. Happy birthday. I passed that momo stall outside the college gate, the one that made us sick in second year, and I nearly ordered a plate. Anyway. I'm proud of you, idiot. Call me back, I've got gossip.
For your partner
Hey. So, I'm on the office stairs because I didn't want anyone to hear this. Happy birthday. Remember when the whole building lost power and we ate cold pizza on the balcony by phone torch? Still the best dinner I've had, and I've eaten your mum's biryani. Okay, someone's coming up the stairs. I love you. More tonight.
For nani
Nani, happy birthday, can you hear me? Okay, good. Mummy says you've been sitting on the jhoola every evening, so I'm picturing you there with the phone held far away, like always. I'm coming in December, and I want the aloo you made last time, with extra hing. Okay, that's all. Oh, and happy birthday again, Nani, in case the first one didn't play.
Hinglish wishes, typed the way you'd say them
Bahut or bohot, nobody agrees, so spell it however you like.
Keep these for friends and cousins, though. Nanaji will be happier with the birthday wishes in Hindi, which are written in Devanagari.
- Happy birthday yaar. Party kab hai, aur iss baar bill tu bharega.
- Janamdin mubarak ho. Saal bhar aise hi hanste raho, bas thoda dheere.
- Bhai, gift mat maangna. Dua le le, aur happy birthday.
- Ek saal aur bade ho gaye, par harkatein abhi bhi class 5 wali hain.
- Aaj diet ki chhutti. Poora cake tera.
- Tere jaisa dost milna mushkil hai, aur tere jaisa late-comer bhi.
- Janamdin ki dher saari badhaiyan. Khush raho, aur kabhi kabhi call bhi kar liya karo.
- Didi, mummy ki daant se bachane ke liye thank you. Har baar.
- Blue ticks aa jaayein toh reply bhi karna. Happy birthday!
- Treat pending hai, bhoolna mat. Happy birthday, bhai.
- Tera voice note 2x pe bhi lamba lagta hai. Phir bhi poora sunti hoon.
- Umar badh rahi hai, lekin DP abhi bhi 2019 wali hai.
- Happy birthday, mere 2 am wale dost.
- Cake kaatne se pehle photo bhejna, warna maanunga nahi.
Sending a birthday card on WhatsApp
There's always one person you'd like to do a bit more for. Make them a birthday card that opens from a link. You add their name and birthday date, pick a cake, write the letter, choose one of the 7 designs and pay. Photos (five at most) and a song go in last.
Copy the link you get at the end and paste it into their chat, under one of the lines above. WhatsApp shows a small preview. They tap it and the card opens on their phone, with nothing to install.
Doing the midnight thing? Build the card after dinner and save the link in your notes, so at twelve it's one paste and send. There's also a vertical 9:16 video, sized for a WhatsApp status.
If you'd like other ways to send a birthday surprise link for WhatsApp, there's a whole post on them.
Frequently asked questions
Is a WhatsApp wish enough, or should you call?
Call the people who'd call you. Your parents and your oldest friend will notice a text-only birthday, and for everyone else a good message is plenty.
What if they leave your wish on blue ticks?
Leave it for a day. Their phone's a flood on their birthday, and plenty of replies only go out the next morning. A "??" follow-up just makes them feel guilty.
How do you reply when forty people wish you?
Reply to each private chat, even briefly, and post one thank-you in each group. The post on thank you for birthday wishes has lines you can borrow.
